A Review of Cybercrime's Impact on Higher Education

Denise Chatam, Chief Security Officer, Lone Star College

Cybercrime has created major problems and continue to increase at institutions of higher learning (academia) and K-12. Academia is emerging as particularly vulnerable for Internet crime. Gaining a better understanding of the factors that influence cybercrime incidents should assist academia, the business community, law enforcement and government officials to develop programs that minimize the negative economic and non-economic impact of cybercrime.

As a result of participating in this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Increase their awareness of Internet vulnerabilities commonly found in an educational environment and associated costs
  • Develop proactive prevention measures of threats in order to make a computing security system architecturally sound
  • Review protection spheres and the building blocks of an information security program
